Recently, we’ve received questions about whether Cayce would approve of vaccinations and other preventives for COVID-19. Would Cayce see use of such preventive measures as showing a lack of faith in God?
We looked at the Cayce readings. Of course, COVID-19 did not exist in Cayce’s day, so there are no specific recommendations for it in the readings. The word “pandemic” does not appear in the readings and no-one ever asked Cayce about the use of masks to prevent spreading disease.
The readings did mention epidemics that occurred in Cayce’s lifetime: A Typhoid (or Typhus) Fever epidemic in NYC was discussed in a reading in 1924. A diphtheria epidemic was mentioned in a dream interpretation reading in 1926. Epidemics of infantile paralysis (polio) in Virginia were discussed in readings in 1934 and 35.
What About Vaccinations?
Cayce’s responses about vaccines were varied and complex.
In reading 142-6 for an ill toddler in 1928, Cayce recommended vaccination. (The reading doesn’t say what vaccination the parents inquired about—probably smallpox):
“(Q) Should he be vaccinated now?
“(A) As soon as the conditions have been set near nominal, for the conditions as are contemplated—this is necessary–but we would certainly use iodine soon after such vaccination. Tincture of iodine rubbed over same.”
In reading 275-9 for a teen-age girl, Cayce recommended against vaccination, given the young girl’s condition—and said that if her eliminations were normalized, the vaccination would be unnecessary.
“(Q) Is vaccination against smallpox advisable?
“(A) Not under existent conditions, especially…
“…In the conditions as respecting vaccination, and the effect same has upon the system–with the activities in the blood supply in the present, this would NOT be well. While the eliminations are kept nominal or normal would not be NECESSARY for this body, but it may be REQUIRED, at the hands of others. We are through with this reading.”
In reading 1958-4, for a four-year old girl, Cayce recommended vaccination, but with the caveat that the shot not be given until her health improved:
“(Q) Would it be well to vaccinate the body for Smallpox now or wait until next Spring?
“(A) Don’t do it while the blood is in its present condition. You might do it after the body has been taking the Atomidine and the Calcios for at least a month or six weeks, and then it would be in a good fix for vaccination.”
And in reading 3172 -2 for a 9 month old baby, Cayce said this about smallpox vaccination:
“(Q) Will the vaccination against smallpox be detrimental?
“(A) Depends upon when it is administered. When it is a little older give plenty of celery and lettuce and you won’t ever have to vaccinate, or if you will keep the vaccine from milk or cow about the body, vaccine will not take.”
In the above reading, Cayce seems to be referring to the fact that contracting cowpox can confer immunity to smallpox. Similar to smallpox, cowpox is a less harmful disease that can be spread from cows to humans.
In four different readings, Cayce recommended administering a serum to prevent Typhoid—and even specified the manufacturer, Sharp & Dohme. Here’s part of one of those readings, given for Cayce benefactor Morton Blumenthal (number 900 in the readings):
“(Q) You will have before you [900], … Broadway, … New York City, N.Y. You will tell us if it is necessary for this body to take the…serum for the prevention of Typhoid Fever that is an epidemic in New York at this time. You will also tell us if this same condition would be correct regarding his mother. his brother, and his brother’s wife and child….
“(A) Now we find the epidemic as is prevalent in this place at this time has reached that stage where, for safety’s sake, better that the serum for prevention of Typhoid would best be taken by a great many. Where we find there is any condition that is in a given body, where pre-disposition is for trouble with digestive system, best that such be taken. As with [900], his mother, his brother, these we find would be necessary.”
A few Cayce readings also discussed the after-effects of vaccinations, recommending that these be treated by improving the eliminations, including the use of laxatives such as Castoria, massage and baths.
To summarize, the verdict of the Cayce readings on vaccinations is—“It depends.”
It depends on the circumstances and the individual—but clearly, the Cayce Source did sometimes encourage the use of preventives created by medical science.
Again—COVID-19 did not exist in Cayce’s day, so there are no specific recommendations for preventing or treating it in the readings. But, we can see that the Cayce Source did not rely only on prayer and natural remedies, but also embraced allopathic (AMA-type) medicine when it was required.
