In a recent e-newsletter, we talked about what a human being really is and used the analogy of the caterpillar that becomes a butterfly. Most of us are in the caterpillar stage now, with little concept of the beings we are meant to become.

But as the readings tell us: “…Man was made a little lower than the angels, yet with that power to become one with God, while the angel remains the angel.” (Reading 900-16)
Our destiny is to be companions and co-creators with the Most High—but that transformation doesn’t just happen automatically
The caterpillar may not be consciously aware of the transition it will experience, yet instinctively it prepares itself for that metamorphosis. It busies itself finding food enough for the present and for the time it will spend in its chrysalis. Then it weaves its cocoon around itself, and within that space, it transforms.
We, too, have to prepare ourselves for metamorphosis. We need to nourish our spirit and mind with positive and uplifting thoughts. (This doesn’t mean pretending everything is sweetness and light at all times. We also need to deal with the challenges and griefs of life—yet work at keeping a positive attitude through it all.)
Then through meditation, prayer and service, we weave around ourselves the spiritual atmosphere in which we gradually transform. For the caterpillar, all this happens in a matter of months or weeks. For us, it may take many lifetimes. One of the many reasons why patience is such an important virtue.
