Approx size: 11” tall x 9” wide
It is a self-portrait of Ruth Fortel. If it was even done by her. Combine this with her painting?
This is a portrait of Ruth Fortel. Created for Christmas 1974.
Ruth Becker Fortel, our former Center’s librarian, was a pioneering abstract artist who trained at the legendary Atelier 17 and helped shape New York’s vibrant downtown arts scene in the 1950s and beyond. Her work reflects the bold experimentation of mid-century printmaking and painting, infused with the spirit of collaboration and innovation from her time at Area Gallery. With deep ties to influential artists and a lifelong dedication to creative and spiritual exploration, Fortel’s pieces offer collectors a rare glimpse into a transformative era of American art.
