Spring is really here, and spring cleaning—inner and outer—is an ancient tradition. The Cayce material offered several ways to cleanse the body internally. One of the more popular methods is the Apple Diet— a 3-day cleanse recommended in readings for more than 20 individuals.
The Apple Diet is a modified fast where you eat only apples for three days, and drink only black coffee and water. One reading advocated eating at least five or six apples a day.
Apples of the “jenneting” varieties were specified in the Apple Diet readings—including Jonathan, Black Arkansas, Red & Golden Delicious, Oregon Red, Sheepnose, and Arkansas Russet.
The dictionary traces the word “jenneting” (some say “juneating”) to an old French festival of St. John’s Day on June 24. It refers to apple varieties that ripen early in the growing season. Some of these heirloom apples are hard to find, but Jonathan and Delicious varieties are available in many stores.
Organic, chemical-free apples are preferred. Apples grown as close to your location as possible are best.
Additional instructions in another reading stated, “Drink plenty of water, and follow the three-day diet with the big dose of Olive Oil.” (1409-9)
Olive oil amounts recommended varied from two-three teaspoons (3673-1) to two tablespoons (780-12) to as much as one-half a teacup (6 oz) which would be 6 tablespoons (1622-1).
For some, the readings suggested repeating the Apple Diet once a month for 2-3 months. For others, they prescribed a quarterly Apple Diet. The readings explained that the Apple Diet would be a restart for the digestive system:
“This is to change the activity through the whole alimentary canal.”
–Edgar Cayce reading 3673-1

Next week, we’ll talk about some of Cayce’s other recommendations for inner spring cleaning—or inner cleaning any time.
