“As has been given, however, that which has prevented and does prevent the whole of civilization becoming a turmoil is the attempt of those who have the ideals of the Prince of Peace at HEART! And as of old, the prayers of ten may save a city; the prayers of twenty-five may save a nation—as the prayers and activities of ONE may! but in union there is strength.”
Edgar Cayce Reading 1598-2
We have posted about the Silent Minute before, but this moment seems a good time to re-state the idea.
In the midst of a global pandemic and a time when our nation is more polarized than at any time since the Civil War – it’s more important than ever to call on the Spirit to work in and through us and through our nation. When we do this collectively, we increase the power of this act.
What is the Silent Minute?
The Silent Minute was observed each night in the UK during WW II at a time when it appeared the U.K. was in peril of being overrun by the Nazis.
Each night, at 9 pm, folks in the U.K. observed a minute of silence for meditation, prayer or whatever each individual believed in—for freedom and a just peace. In London, the Silent Minute was observed during the 9 pm chiming of Big Ben. For others outside London, the ringing of Big Ben was broadcast by the BBC. Many Britons credited the winning of WWII to the Silent Minute.
About the Silent Minute, Wikipedia says, “An anecdote emphasizes the profound power of the group meditation of the Silent Minute. In 1945 a British intelligence officer was interrogating a high Nazi official. He asked him why he thought Germany lost the war. His reply was, “During the war, you had a secret weapon for which we could find no counter measure, which we did not understand, but it was very powerful. It was associated with the striking of the Big Ben each evening. I believe you called it the ‘Silent Minute.’” (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Minute)
We don’t have Big Ben to remind us, but a growing group of Americans and people all over the world have been observing the Silent Minute since July, 2018.
Based on those who’ve joined the Silent Minute FB group, people in Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, India, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Slovakia, South Africa and the U.K. (both England and Scotland) are keeping the Silent Minute with us.
Since July, 2018, we have been sharing an intention for Justice, Peace and the Highest Good for the U.S. and the world.
When COVID-19 hit, we added Healing to the intention. Not only do the U.S and the world need healing from the pandemic—but healing is needed now in so many ways! Healing is needed on another level for the polarization and enmity that has arisen, not only in the U.S. but in other nations as well.
So, the intention now is for *JUSTICE, PEACE, HEALING and THE HIGHEST GOOD*.
How do you keep the Silent Minute?
The UK is all one time zone, but we have several, so:
- On the East Coast, we observe the Silent Minute at 9 pm
- In Central Time: 8 pm
- Mountain Time: 7 pm
- Pacific Time: 6 pm
- Hawaiian Time: 3 pm
- U.K.: 2 am. (A challenging but excellent time for meditation and prayer.)
If you can’t do it at that time, pick a time that works for you.
FOR THOSE INCLINED TO DO THIS, IT IS A COMMITMENT.
We make an effort to observe the Silent Minute each night–with prayer, meditation, a rosary or other ritual or just your personal intention– for Justice, Peace, Healing and the Highest Good for our own nation and the world.
We suggest avoiding anything partisan in this effort. Just focus on Justice, Peace, Healing and the Highest Good for the world. We’re reaching out to the Divine, and Spirit knows how to create the highest good better than we do.
It’s important to be consistent. BUT we’re all human–so if you miss the time or forget and then remember later, do your Silent Minute when you remember, if possible.
And if you miss a night –or several nights–don’t fret about it. Just get back into the flow as soon as you can.
When keeping your Silent Minute, it helps to be aware of all the others doing it too–and join your intention with theirs.
There is also a Silent Minute FB group. Joining is completely optional, but since we’re trying to create an energy field of positive spiritual energy, it seemed it might be helpful to share with one another from time to time. It’s here:

This would be a good time to intensify the Silent Minute effort and expand it to more people all over the world.
Please SHARE this idea with those you think would be interested. Thank you!
